I have a problem with my son's computer. It is a custom built computer and is running on XP with a realtek 97 AC sound card. (I think). I had the same problem after an automatic update but cannot remember how I solved it. I have tried system restore, uninstalled and reinstalled the card and find I am in a bigger mess than before. Now he needs directX 9.0. So rather than mess it up more can someone help me get out of this mess? Thank you very much.

The fact that you say it is a realtek sound card tells me that it is an integrated sound controller built into the motherboard.. You need to go to the motherboard makers website and download the appropriate drivers. Their may have been a compatibility issue between the old drivers and sp2.

If you don't know the motherboard make and model (often printed on the surface of the motherboard) you can use the bios number that is displayed on the first screen of boot up to track it down.
