These should work for win98. You ca get a free firewall @ zonealarm.com.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

although the other answers give you good links and answers ,i will be honest with you
as a ex-windows 98 user(now xp) security is a negative point of windows 98,i had so many security breaches with 98 and that is why i decided to use xp,98 is probally the easiest operating system to hack into, but i must congratulate you for at least trying to find security software for windows 98,at least your trying to make your system secure
and to a extent, you can make windows 98 secure, the only part that really lets it down is the internet explorer browser, this is what hackers love in 98,there wasnt enough patches(updates) made for i.e in 98 so it was compromised all the time
so the first thing you should do is start using a different browser...mozzila firefox(http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/)is a excellent alternative browser and works well in 98,it has a much more secure interface and has some great plug-ins
secondly use a browser security apt called "mcafee site advisor(http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ie.html),this is avalible for firefox, and will advise you on which sites are safe to visit by a green, orange,or red banner on your browser, this way you wont have to visit a bad site to find out its full of spyware
good anti-spyware dosent have to cost you anything...spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)is probally the best anti-spyware program avalible for windows 98,it scans and cleans and also protects by blocking bad pages
lavasoft,s adaware personal(http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)works well alongside spybot and is a good program for using with spybot, this program is good at cleaning adware from your p.c,the spyware responsible for "pop ups"
there is only one decent firewall avalible for windows 98,zone-alarm(http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp) is a good allround firewall, that will protect any unauthorized access to your p.c and as you are using 98 this is probally the most important peice of software you will need until you upgrade to xp
while on the subject of internet security,if you need a good anti-virus,avast4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)is a excellent anti-virus and is probally the best free anti-virus out there,it uses very little system resources and updates daily,i have used it for over a year now...very good
i hope this advice will help you
good luck

i take advantage of ZoneAlarm internet protection this is an all-in-one... Anti-spyware > Lavasoft advert-spyware Anti-Virus > avast! Antivirus Firewall > verify factor ZoneAlarm Firewall nonetheless so, i'll nonetheless propose you to area with somewhat money and "so on" to purchase a series because of the fact in certainty it is going to likely be extra user-friendly to apply and cope with whilst they're altogether as a replace of having 3 diverse classes, 3 diverse interfaces etc at the same time. additionally from time to time the softwares could no longer be compatible with yet another utility. in case you have that money purchase Norton 360 or ZoneAlarm internet protection.

The following are two decent spyware removers:

1.Ad-aware SE Personal
2.Spybot Search and Destroy (Be Careful if you download VERSION 1.4 because many people have pointed out that it contains many bugs. I suggest you download VERSION 1.3 but you'll have to search for it on the net because download.com only has available VERSION 1.4 for download)

You can both download them from http://www.download.com

For an excellent free firewall you can get ZoneAlarm. You can download this from download.com also.
