i agree to andrew to an extent, but some av's like norton or mcafee can be notoriously tough to remove. that may be a problem. bitdefender 8 is a free version that you can try and yes it is pretty good. the best antivirus in terms of performance i have seen is nod32, works pretty damn good even on older computers but unfortunately only has a 28 day trial period and is not free. an antivirus shouldnt use all your computers ram, its an addon. avast is another good one and is free too, no avg's and kapersky's plz

Look into either AVG Free or Avast which takes up less resources. Make sure you keep the virus definitions up to date or you are wasting your time installing an anti virus. which are sometimes given away by ISPs. Microsoft and security? This is a joke, right?

For Anti-Virus - AVG
For Firewall - Zone Alarm
For Anti-Adware - Spybot & Adaware
Also put on Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard.
All of above are free - and together make a decent bundle.

I hate to say it, but it's rather subjective. I've used ActiveVirusShield, ClamAV, AVG and Avast and really, it comes down to GUI design and trust more than anything else. All are good products, and there really is no "best" solution.

Software diversity is a good thing, we wouldn't be very secure if we were all running one package - it would be exploited because it's the only game in town.
