My guess would be B. Many people know what words mean, but they don't use them regularly.

I would guess the narrowest of most people's vocabulaies is their spoken vocabulary.

I would have to say B is the most true.

A means that they have an extensive vocabulary and use it only when writing. Which could be very true, but i believe almost anyone can recognize/know words once they see them in context.

C really depends on the writer. for example i don't use the word eunym (means a name that is fitting, like a priest being named christian, although i am not sure if i spelled it right, lol) in every day speech, but i might use it in an essay.

D means they are unable to read good (lol)

I would choose C because people tend to use the same words over and over again in their writing. Its hard to conjure up new words to use, that's why the thesaurus was created. I would pick C over B because I think that more people have a broader verbal vocabulary than a reading recognition vocabulary.

I'd pick either B or C.
I would NOT pick A or D because people tend to recognize words they hear or read better than they can just think of them. For example, if you want to say something articulately, you may not be able to think of a certain word you want to use. But if you're reading something and that word pops up, you'll know what it is just by reading it and understanding it within the context that it was written. I'm actually going to say C as my final answer. Hey, will you post the correct answer when you find out what it is? I'd be interested in hearing it....

For me, anyway, definitely B. I recognize a lot more words reading than I would use in writing, and that is more than in my speaking vocabulary.
