Once you power your wireless router, you can always find it on your wireless list. It doesn't mean the router is connected to your ISP correctly.
Did you connect your wireless router to a DSL modem? If so, you may turn your modem off and wait for a while (POWER OFF, 2 or 3 mintues). Then turn it on again unitl the modem runs well. Then refresh your connection on your laptop and connect anyway. Then, try to use your IE to see whether the connection is good. Just based on my experience...

Go into the Control Panel and run the Wireless Connection Wizard. It will set everything up for you. Be sure you have the password (WEP or WPA key) you gave the router handy.

Do you have a built in adapter?

If yes....go into your wireless manager....locate the name of your router( you can name it incase someone else has the same brand router thats within your detectable radius) Select the router and click connect.

If not you need to buy an external PCMIA card or usb wireless internet adapter.

You need to run the adapters software on the laptop. If it came with a pre-installed adapter then the software is already on it, and you need to run the Network Connection Wizard and put in the WEP or WPA encryption key in order to make the connection.

Or you can manually configure the connection by going into the Wireless Connection on the Network Connections Page and right click the connection, select Properties, and go into the Wireless tab, click Add under the network area and add the SSID name of your network connection. If you never changed its name it will be the name of your router with some numbers after it in order to make it your particular connection. Once you have added your SSID to the Preferred Networks, then make sure it is at the top of the list if you have more than one connection configured.

You can have more than one Preferred Network, such as one you connect to at work, or at school, or at the local hotspot, etc. When you want to connect to one or another you go to the Preferred area and put the one you want to connect to at the top.

Once you have added the SSID, click on it to highlight, then click on Properties under that box, and your settings page for that connection will appear. On the Association page put in the information for that connection, such as the encryption method, and if it is shared, pre-shared, TKIP ect. You get this information off of your Routers configuration page via the web based page. Usually it is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 depending on your Router, you can find this in your Routers information. Once you put in the encryption and its neccasary information, you then put in the key in the two boxes below. After this click on the Connection Tab, and put a check mark in "connect to this network when in range", and then shut this box by clicking OK. Then click on Advanced, back on the Wireless Network Tab, and select one of those boxes. Usually it is the middle one and make sure you place a check box in the box to ensure you only connect to your preferred networks, otherwise you may accidently connect to a niegbors network and piss them off. lol

It sounds harder than it really is. Get this book it will help you a lot--Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Netowrking, by Mark Edward Soper. It is a great book, only about 350 pages but with a lot of easy to follow directions in setting up and configuring a Home or Small office Network, Wired, Wireless or Mixed. It also has a lot of other information like for connection other items to your network, t.v.s, entertainment systems, TiVo, Game Consoles, etc. I love this book, it helped me learn a lot, got me off to a good start in learning all this stuff and is great for reference later on when trouble hits as it has trouble shooting steps too.

Good luck and I hope you get connected really soon. Have a great day.
