There aren't many differences today. Basically Democrats are Republicans in cheaper suits.

First of all, let me disclose that I'm a biased democrat.
In theory, democrats believe in spending more public money (taxes) for the common good than republicans do, republicans emphasize self-sufficiency above all else.
Republicans, in theory, believe in smaller government and lower taxes. They think that with lower taxes, people and businesses can do better and use the money to buy the same things taxes would cover. They believe in privatizing everything (having private companies like Halliburton building things instead of the government building things, for instance). The problem with this is that they tend to give the government contracts only to their rich friends.
I am a democrat--while it sounds great to have lower taxes (believe me, I'm not thrilled that 1/3 of my income goes to taxes), I think it is important to spend public money on education, health care, and elderly care. I think people should be self-sufficient, but I also don't think they should die in the street if they are not self-sufficient (If you go to some other countries, you will see what this is like--I have seen it and don't want it here).. There are a number of reasons people cannot be self-sufficient, for example a poor education, dealing with setbacks such as bankruptcy over a health problem, or being left to parent children alone (and support them alone).
I got a first-rate public education and think that it is a good use of my tax dollars to offer this to all Americans. Unfortunately, not all public education is equal and it is very unequal.
And personally, I don't want government to control every aspect of my life any more than the next guy, but keep in mind that it is the W. Bush administration that has increased the size of government more than any recent Democratic president.
Both groups have members of all kinds of religions and lack of religion, but most fundamentalist Christians tend to be republicans because republicans tend to have an anti-abortion platform.

How about this:
Republicans typically hold the view that government should be small, spending and taxing should be minimized while public services should be privatized and or left in the hands of the people. Socially, the majority are for the death penalty and against abortion.
Democrats typically believe in government safety nets for the less fortunate in our society and believe that government has an obligation to help all people regardless of economic status. They are typically sympathetic to the environment and and pro-choice.

If Republicans dominated the government, the world would end due to things like pollution and economic collapse.
If Democrats dominated the government, there would be too many things to name that could end the world.

one is a slow ride to a socialist economic collapse (republicans) the other is a speeding rocketship ride to the same goal.
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."
-Alexander Tyler.
No, he wasn't writing about the United States. This quote is well over one hundred years old. Tyler was writing about the fall of the Athenian Republic.
I think we are somewhere between the complacency and apathy stage.

I went to Wikipedia and it looks like they have a lot of information; towards the bottom there are links for their ideologies. There is a start at least.
