this is simply out of curiousity but I'm not sure how to explain this cause its weird. For some reason, I can make my eyes dilate whenever I want to, which makes me be able to see things clearer or blurrier whenever I want. And when I'm underwater I can make my pupils dilate to where I can see really good too. what exactly am I doing and how am I able to do this?

I know you're not trying to insult me or anything and I don't feel insulted. I have looked in the mirror while doing this and the iris gets a lot tinier. I know I'm obviously doing -something- whether you believe me or not (and its okay you don't have to believe me or think its possible I'm only asking this question out of curiousity) but I can make my vision worse or better than it usually is. And as for going underwater, I can do this there too and I can see everything a lot clearer than normally underwater (I haven't tried to make it blurrier under there so I'm not sure if I can do it both ways)

Registered Nurse here; Sorry to burst your bubble, but the response your describing with your eyes are autonomic, another words, your own body adapts to these different conditions within your environment. Please I'm not trying to insult you, but you couldn't control the dilation of your pupils no matter how hard you tried. For the eyes are so similar to a camera lens, according to the amount of light the retina allows so many rays of light into the eye, and this is what controls your pupil. As for as being under water and pupils dilating yes, your brain is sending impulses or direction to your retina to allow you to see more clearly, for survival purposes. It's very complex.
I'm sure you will disagree with me, but I do appreciate the opportunity to address such a well worded question.

It is quite possible to do this.
It is called "accomodation" and everyone has this abillity until they reach a certain age. . usually around 17-18 (give or take).
Anytime you go to have your eyes checked this is the reason you end up getting your eyes dilated.
Your optometrist/ophthalmologist can test your eyes with a retinascope while your eyes are dilated and they can get a more accurate reading because dilating your eyes temp. paralyzes this "accomodation" ability.
It is amazing that you noticed this as it seems that very few people are so alert to things like this and alot of other things that they really need to be noticing about their bodies and their health.
You get an A+ for your observation.

Have you looked in a mirror to make sure that your pupils are dilating (the black part of your eye expanding/contracting)? It sounds like you are focusing and unfocusing, like when people look at those Magic Eye puzzles. The pupil will dilate or contract based on lighting. It will also dilate when you find someone attractive, I've heard. I work with optometrists, and I don't recall anyone dilating their pupils at will. If you actually can, please be careful to not dilate them in bright light, as this can lead to eyestrain/injury. Hope this helps! Have a happy Thanksgiving!

i can do this too! I always do it to freak my friends out. I don't notice a difference in my vision when i do it, tho, perhaps because i wear contacts.
When I do it, i kind of "fake" an adrenealine rush sort of...i mimic the reaction my body has when someone sneaks up on me..I don't know how to explain it, which makes them dialate. How do you do it?

I´m no doctor, but I´m thinking that maybe it´s because since the iris (the color part) of your eye is a muscle, somehow, you are able to flex that particular muscle, which many of us can´t, kind of like people who can wiggle their ears and nose! but I suggest you ask a doctor!
