Not all Democrats are liberal. One great example is a former Senator named Zell Miller (look him up.) However, today it is becoming very rare to see Democrats that are not extremely liberal. It is safe to say that the years of the Kennedy Democrats are gone. Even Sen. Ted Kennedy (JFK's brother) is far left. In my opinion, the Democratic party has taken a hard left turn somewhere along the line and unfortunately, most do wish for abortion to remain legalized and most are ignorant of the fact that all life is precious - unless it's the life of a terrorist (sad but true) On the contrary there are a good number of prominent liberal Republicans such as Lincoln Chafee, Olympia Snowe, Arlen Specter - and so on.

From an outsiders view (I'm a Brit), the answer is a categorical No!
Liberals believe that the free market needs some controls, in the form of workers' rights, anti-discrimination laws and support for small business and local producers. They tend to believe in progressive taxation so that wealth is not concentrated in the hands of a few but spread amongst the many. Liberal philosophy frequently extends to a belief that the government should provide for a degree of general welfare, including benefits for the unemployed, housing for the homeless, and medical care for the sick.
Sadly in US politics there only seems to be a right wing and a very right wing. There is no party in the US that equates with "proper" liberal parties elsewhere in the world e.g the Lib Dems and Labour in the UK. There seem to be no politician in the US who accept that strong workers rights, a strong social security safety net open to all who need it for as long as they need it, and a free at the point of entry public health care system are essentials to a country. Instead we see slashing of welfare to the poorest people, increasing numbers of US citizens unable to afford medical treatment and a systematic dismantling of union rights, health and safety legislation and a rolling back of equality laws.
Whether believing abortion and homosexual marriage are right or not is completely independent of political viewpoint. It tends to be based on things like religious belief, upbringing etc. The difference between so-called "liberals" and the conservatives who would like to see it banned, is that "liberals" tend to believe that these things are none of the Government's business and that it is not the function of government to interfere and pry into a person's privacy.

No, not all democrats are liberal and not all support abortion or gay marriage. There is a group who call themselves the bluedog democrats and they are very conservative on social issues. In fact, a lot of these guys got elected in the midterm, it wasn't the liberal dems.
A lot of what separates dems and republican is views on where taxes come from and how much power the government has in your life, social issues are a separate matter. Trouble is a lot of single issue folk have married to one party or the other.

Not all Democrats are liberal. Here in Colorado, a pro-life democratic governor was elected (Bill RItter). But most moderate to conservative Democrats are usually in the Rocky Mountain West or in the South. Occasionally you might find one in the Midwest(like Casey of Pennsyvania).

of course not, some are more moderate or conservative while others are far more liberal. Abortion and homosexual marriage is a personal opinion, but most dems support those two things.

No - on each of those issues there are Democrats who hold a more conservative position. Jim Webb from Virginia or Bob Casey from Pensylvannia may not vote with Democrats on those issues. For now, it seems, there is a common party goal to reform our economic and international policies.

There are extreme left liberals and then there are centrist liberals. I believe that most folks that consider themselves liberals are centrists.
