Assuming you are on a laptop, look for a NumLk (Number lock) key. Since most laptop typeboards lack a numeric keypad, the Num Lk key lets you convert part of the regular keyboard into a number keypad. (Get a lot of Help Desk calls from people who can not enter passwords because their Num lk is on).

This happens on laptops alot. There is a function on the laptop call NumLk that you can use to key in numbers more easily. You can disable it very quickly. On a thinkpad you hit shift & NumLk together.

Are you on a laptop? If so, you probably have Number lock turned on. So, press Shift and Num Lock at the same time, it should turn it off.
