It's annoying beacause they end up off of the screen sometimes. I feel dumb because I know it must be something silly and easily changed!

I DO NOT have auto arrange selected. I move pics from my memory card to my desktop until I can sort them. I know I can re-arrange them by name or type but I don't want my permanent icons to move too.

By the way, it is always diagonal whether I have align to grid selected or not.

You have "auto arrange" selected..right click on a blank spot on your desktop and point to "arrange icons by" and uncheck auto arrange

Maybe because you just put it in a random place and it stays there. Sometimes, computers do that. Try moving the icons around. If they can stay wherever they want, that means you can format them however you want them to. If you don't want it like that, then don't set it to auto arrange.

Because your brain in crooked. Right-click an empty area of your desktop and choose "Arrange Icons By..." and then choose how you want to arrange them.
