You need to tell your laptop to actually connect to it. It will automatically identify that there is a wireless network within range, but will not automatically connect to it unless you tell it to. There should be an icon near your clock in the system tray that is for your wireless connection. Double click it and tell it to connect to your wireless network.

I assume you're running WInXP? Click start and Connect To. Hopefully, you have a Wireless Network Connection option. Choose that as it enables your wireless LAN. Is there an icon on your system tray with a monitor and radio waves? Right click on that and select View Available Wireless Networks. See if your home WiFi network is active, then choose connect.

I hope that works.
