Most cars these days use sequential fuel injection systems that fire the injectors when the intake valve opens. The camshaft is part of the system that opens the valves, and the camshaft position sensor (the cam sensor's full, formal name) either tells the computer which valve is about to open, or it marks when the first cylinder fires and the computer keeps track of the cylinders in between times the cam sensor signals to it.

A camshaft is a pipe that rotates in your engine. It has a bunch of lobes on it that push down on the valves to open and close them as the rod rotates around.

it tells your PCM, thats your computer, where the cam is at all times. i'm not sure if the PCM can retard the cam or not.
