Last I heard you didn't choose. As a defence lawyer you need to ensure that all clients - guilty or not - have an adequate and competence defence. By asking this question you've demonstrated that the don't understand the founding basis of most judicial systems. Presumed Innocent until proven guilty.

Even the guilty deserve the best defence possible and it is not the position of a defense attorney to assign guilt.

This is one of the major foundations of all democratic legal systems and why they work.

But I am sure some lawyers do.

tell the client that the only person they never lie to is their lawyer. then assess the facts, evidence etc and see if you can ethically represent them. if not, so advise them, and assure them that privilege exists.
