Yuri Gargarin is known for being the first man in space went he went into orbit on April 12 1961. However in 1960 a man by the name of Joe Kittinger went to an altitude of 32km above the earth in a helium balloon. This is what he had to say "There is a hostile sky above me. Man will never conquer space. He may live in it, but he will never conquer it. The sky above is void and very black and very hostile."
Joe spent 11 minutes in that environment then he returned to earth. There was only one way to do it from a balloon at that altitude, yep, he jumped from 103,000ft. They have footage of him jumping out. There was a camara mounted in the balloon, there was also a camera mounted on his space suit. It was amazing, you can see the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space, and you just see the earth getting closer and closer. He fell for 4 and a half minutes.
He fell at close if not the speed of sound, but with no air around him it was a silent fall. There was also no russling of his space suit or anything untill he reentered the atmosphere. He returned to earth safely.
