Seems like you know little about our good neighbors... they are the ONLY nation that comes to our aid during our times of natural disasters, as they also did during Katrina... they got to Louisiana BEFORE our own Federal government aid got there... and they have done so many times in the past, too.
I would prefer to help any Canadian than any dumb redneck waving a Neo-Nazi or KKK flag any day of the week! They are also the kind of people that help other nations in times of need. They REALLY have no enemies except those that WE made for them while they have assisted us. We have a lot to learn from them... but don't mistake good neighbors for supposedly having a week military... they have fewer enemies than we do and they have no need to flaunt their might (and most of their might goes along the way of brains!)
The USA has put into power almost all of the dictators in the Caribbean, South American, Central America in the past and present; and who do you think also trained many of those countries' military, air force and naval forces... that are now our enemies? Yes, the good ol' USA.
The only thing we can blame Canadians for is the cold weather that comes from up north, not much else and for Mary Pickford and Alex Trebeck (and a bunch of other movie and TV celebrities and singers from the 50s to recent years).
Has anyone been keeping tabs on how many scientists and chemists and others in the sciences we've trained from countries that are now our enemies...??? Oh, let's not forget the Nazi scientists we hired and made American citizens in spite of their collaboration with Hitler and the Nazi regime...!

Canada doesn't have a lot of enemies; therefore, it doesn't need the military might of the United States. In addition, Canada is party to many peacekeeping treaties including NATO that make the need for a vast military moot.

This is actually a good question.
I think part of it is that Canada does not tend to stick it's nose in other countries' business very often... meaning they don't tick ppl off enough to need a large military.
And I think the other part of it is knowing they have the world's largest superpower as their neighbor. They know that the USA would never let a direct neighbor be conquered by a non-ally.

Its simple. Its because it borders the US. Being close allies and neighbors with the US is a huge deterent. Canada has no threat of being attacked by anyone. They don't need a strong military.

Because political correctness and modern liberalism disavows the concept of "enemies." Anyone can be negotiated with under any circumstances.
With that kind of warped mentality coupled with the idea that the state must be the nanny to adults, money that should be used for the common defense is used for social programs (regardless of whether those programs work well or not).
** While self-righteously criticizing the United States, Canada sure loves to depend on its military protection.
