I have a Dell Notebook. Dell has informed me that I have USB 1.0 ports, not 1.1. I wish to add a PCMIA card or a component which will hook into my 1394 port to add USB 2.0 hubs. Unfortunately, it appears that most of these add-ons are only backward compatible to USB 1.1 according to their literature. I've had several CSRs tell me that the products would work anyways, but I am skeptical. Would appreciate any comments or experiences with such an upgrade.

The notebook is 4+ years old. I think that the add-on that I am trying to use would work; someone informed me that the reference to backwards compatible 1.1 referred to the DEVICES I want to use and NOT the existing hubs. That makes sense.

Yep, USB 2.0 devices can gracefully downgrade to USB 1.1 or 1.0 automatically. The only problem you'll face is (obviously) slower transfer rates. Other than that, your good to go.
