Something that can be put together, taken apart and put together a different way. This supports creativity, and perception.
Putting it together means there is a picture in his mind and he is trying to build that picture. Physics gets involved because if must stay together, stand up, not fall over. Check out QUADRO!

All parts should be too big to fit inside the mouth!

Phonetics, or start Flute, violin, oboe lessons. Music supports math, discipline, and character development!

Now way on the Elmo - my 5 year old thinks Elmo is for babies, so a 6 year old would for sure feel that way as well.

For a boy, I'd go with the Playmobile Pirate playset or the Fisher Price Imagination Castle.

For a girl, American Dolls are a huge hit (though quite expensive), music or cool clothes are also popular with some girls.

It really depends, Nintendo ds lite, I pod, PlayStation 3, Nintendo wii, lots of things are pretty popular right now. My 6 yr. Old son wants a trick bike. Girls that age are really into BRATZ dolls.

The disney - Pixar movie Cars, you can get the movie or they have all kinds of great merchandise, I've been collecting this stuff for my nephews and they love it.
