Both but most recently has been given to girls. It started out as a family surname as in "John Madison" , ergo "Madison Avenue", but, as with most trends, the last name became a first name.

More of a girl's name because when the name is shortened --- it becomes Maddie.
However there are names that are interchangeable for boy/girl : Kelly, Chris, Tracey,Scotty/Scottie,Morgan, Taylor, Aaron/Erin, Parker (there's an actress who's named Parker Posey), Conner,Leslie( think Leslie Howard, male actor),Laurie/Lori(remember the boy on "Little Women" named Laurie?), Billy/Billie, Joey,Jonnie/Johnny, Jessie, Danny/Dani and several others ---

I have to go with Girl on this one. I know a Madison so my opinion could be a little bias. We call her Maddie. :)

i think of Addison and Madison are female names, even nonetheless i recognize of adult men named Addison. As for Jamie, i think of it became initially a nickname for James, yet i do in comparison to Jamie for a adult men' call. It sounds too girly!

I have only known it to be a girl's name. I'm sure some have used it for a boy's name - but I think he'd be a pretty big target for teasing.
