A girl I work with just told me that her cousin just gave birth. At the hospital they brought the baby into her room and her boyfriend fed him. Then afterwards her boyfriend handed over the baby and the mom was like "this is not our baby". All is well and no one else had her baby but why did this happen in the first place. Where I gave birth we had our wrist bands checked everytime our son came to our room or left. I was shocked that this happened.

Im also shocked that happened! The hospital where I had my son was sooo good at checking our wristbands. My son actually stayed in the room with me the entire time after I gave birth to him. He wasn't allowed out of the room without myself or my husband. And if the nurse had to take him, they made us check our wristbands again to make sure it was our baby when they brought him back. That is terrible and that hospital needs a talking to!

Baby's change so much in the first few hours of life, their color of skin and face shap. Their eyes open more and head starts a normal shape. It is hard to see a baby for the first time and then a few hours later. They do look different. But you are right. MOST if not all hospitals do the wristband thing before the baby leaves the room for the first time. I would feel horrible if I was the mother..

Scary, they accidentally gave them the wrong baby!?! Thank goodness everything worked out OK, like their baby hadn't already left the hospital with someone else! We couldn't have been given the wrong baby and not noticed, my girl was born over 2lbs and longer than the next biggest baby in the maternity ward (lucky me), with the fattest cheeks one could imagine. She was unmistakable. Not very pretty, but unmistakable. They also used wristbands, although she was out of my sight just once or twice for short periods. Hopefully they've tightened up their system so that never happens again!!!

Yeah that is odd. I remember in the hospital where my brother was born, unless their was some kind of emergency the baby never left the mother's room unless the mom came with him. The babies had to stay with the mom at all times.

Wow! That's pretty scary! Luckily there were no problems. They gave my husband and I both wrist bands, and checked to make sure they matched everytime they came to take the baby and when they brought him back.

I though all hospital do the wrist band check? The need to contact the person that runs the hospital to make sure things get straighten out.

Oh my gosh--that is terrible!
It makes me wonder -- what if the mom was asleep during the birth like for an emergency c-section and wouldn't have been able to recognize that they baby wasn't theirs? Wow.

that is why my baby stayed in my room. i dont trust anyone. especially a tired nurse after working a night shift
