i've got 77 acorns into some ground I sort of worked down. Anyway all the acorns have sprouted/ germinated whatever you call it so they are all fit. However do I need to keep the acorns in the dark for awhile or something? The acorns are outside in the elements behind some wire mesh fencing will they be ok?

Whats else do i need to know to grow oak saplings? and later trees?

Acorns sprout while laying on top of the ground. They extend a tap root down in late fall, to start the growing process. No need to keep them in the dark, but the mesh might help pests from gnawing on them. Squirrels usually won't bother ones that are germinated.

I have 10 acres of land full of different kinds of oaks. They pop up all over the place without any help. Being in the foothills I probably get more rain though. So, if you have a normal wet winter and get enough rain, they should do okay. Space them now before the taproot gets to deep or you won't be able to do it without harming the root. And depending on where you are you might want to water them deeply once in a while in the spring once the rain stops. Good luck!

Acorns have been growing into oaks quite sucessfully without much help for 1000s of years so you don't need to do much apart from wait. You have to wait a really really long time for them to get big though.

This site starts with identification of oaks, and differing needs. Procedes to gathering of acorns, potting up (or sowing directly in ground, and sapling care. Give it a try--too much material to extract here.

Your acorns are in the dark, under ground, when they drop the the forest there isn't any one our there running a bout collecting them they either grow or nor.So i think you are doing a great job. carry on you are ok

You might want to cover them with a thin layer of fallen leaves? I wouldnt use just oak leaves though but a mixture. It will help protect them in the event of a hard frost.

Might as well pop a few up and enjoy them as inside trees for awhile they take forever to grow.
Also you can further protect the rest outside from critters by placing a few stakes with compact discs hanging from them by strings.

No need to keep them in the dark just protect them from rabbits and squirrels.
