I have been working in Corporate America for 17 years. Most of my jobs have allowed me to travel the world, increase my salary to my current level of $110K. I find that my career path of having a job (just over broke) is not satisfying to me any more. I often think about starting my own business but have discovered that I am risk averse. How have you all overcome your fear of failure and started something on your own? I have a fair amount of money saved and my wife supports me 100%. I have an idea of the type of business I want to start. Question is, how have you overcome this fear of the unknown? Was it successful for you? Would love to hear from you. Thanks....

Well, you don't really need to overcome any fears. In your situation, it is entirely possible to get by without tripping over them. Just be sure that you commit no more than 10% of your assets to your new business... Also, some businesses can be started part-time or run by a semi-absentee owner; consider one of those. Someone I know owns several delis; he spends several hours a week in each; cooks and cashiers do just fine without him on premises...

I can relate to you 100%
My husband became owner of a pawn shop 3 years ago. I had to give up the security of my 9-5 job to work with him. I was very scared at first but finally I just said..you know what? You only live once. And I did it. It was the best thing I ever did. Just him and I work there there's no boss, and all the profit we make is our own which makes you have more pride in the job you do. Please I urge you if owning your own business is really what you want in life, just do it. There is no way to overcome the fear 100% (my husband and I still worry, even though we are VERY successful).
There will always be the fear of just starting out, but, just remember everyone who owns their own business felt the same way. I urge you to follow your dreams
Best Of Luck

Sometimes yo have to bit the bullet and take chances. Find a resturant that is up for sale (the all ready had a reputaion, not a chain) and go for that. My mom just did this and is becoming very succesful, I am stuck in the corperate world.

You make $110k a year and are "just over broke"? You need to learn to prioritize your expenses and cut out what you don't NEED.
