For example, if you order a $500 dollar bottle and only finish half with your date, do you get to take the bottle home or do they just put it back in the fridge or give it to the kitchen staff?

And if they do re-cork it, doesn't that lower the value for the next person who'd want to order the same kind?

Hey Now...

Here in NYC the waiter will re-cork it for you ...
The problem is if you get pulled over by the cops...
Putting it in the trunk is probably a good idea, unless you
have a PBA card!!!
:-)

If you buy the wine in a decanter (house wines) you can
bet its being recycled!!!

Yep, it depends on where you are at the time. And listen, if you are spending 500 bucks on a bottle of wine, let me take you shopping, I'll get you a terrific wine but you have to let me keep the change.
Most laws state no open containers. So in most places I 've worked you finish it or you lose it. That is why you can order it by the glass as well as by the bottle. However, a few places have recorked it and recommended that you place it in your trunk. BUT, I won't mention any names, but still other places "marry" the wines left over. Like kind wines are consolidated. The same brand and type of course, and then sold by the glass, never as a bottle though.
So there ya have it. And yes, sometimes the kitchen staff endulges.

If you buy the bottle, you've BOUGHT the bottle. Thus, they will cork it, bag it, and send it on home with you!

They CANNOT re-cork and serve the used bottle of wine to another table after it has sat at yours.

Normally they will re-cork it for you and you can take it home. At most restaurants when you buy a wine that is that expensive they will go ahead and do it or offer for you to take it home.

Yes you can take it home. Good restuarants will re-cork it for you or at least put a stopper in it for you and put it in a bag. But put it in your trunk so you don't get in trouble if you get pulled over.

In Kansas the law is that they will cork it and put it into a special bag that is sealed.

Well, if you don't take it home with you like you should......especially if you spend 500 dollars. I suppose they say they dump it out. lol Yeah right. Meanwhile in the backroom the staff is slightly altered. lol

It depends on your local alcohol laws.

In some areas, they will recork the bottle (tamper proof seal) so you can take it home to enjoy later.

In some areas, it must be consumed on site where purchased.

idealistically the remains are poured out. but, sometimes i wonder if the staff finishes it off or "recycles" the wine by topping off partially full bottles.
