I'm looking for a citation for the (original) source of the quote. Please do not refer me to others who have simply quoted the line withOUT a citation to the original source.

The only person I can find tied to the quote is supreme court justice Clarence Thomas. His complete quote is, "No government can blatantly favor one faith or church over the others, or favor belief in God or the Supreme Being over non-believers.”

1st Amendment is a reference, the direct quote, I can't help you there. Maybe somewhere in the Federalist Papers (explanation of the Bill of Rights)

the establishment clause of the first amendment is a very close source . . .the quote probably paraphrased the first amendment.
