I've used Terro Ant liquid. It's the best I've found. You put a few drops on a anything non-absorbent in the area you've seen them and they come and lap it up. It works like a charm and isn't messy (it's a clear liquid). They love it. When it's gone, just put a few drops more until no more ants come. The most I've had to use is two treatments of a dime sized area of the liquid. Very quickly, you'll notice ...NO Ants. It's the easiest to use and best product I've found. Don't mess with the traps they sell, just get the liquid. They take it back to the source and it kills them also. Never had an ant problem since.

Make a little cake with some borax added. (AKA boric acid.) This is harmless to humans and pets, but deadly to ants. Add sugar to attract them. Break into pieces and put out where the anthills are, covered with a clay flower pot or similar item, so that the birds won't get the cake, and so the cover won't be too light to blow away. The ants will slowly go after it, especially if you have pre-torn it into pieces. They take it back to the nest and the other ants eat it and die. This will take several days, but it is fairly cheap, easy, safe and fun!

Quit screwing around and put Top Choice Fire Ant control over entire lawn and flower bed at a rate of 2 Lbs per thousand feet.
This effects the fire ants nervous system. It takes at least 3 weeks to become effective, but last an entire year.
Put in your fertilizer spreader and treat the lawn, don't wast time trying to spot treat.
It works great and gives you much more time to do other foolish and fun activities, like beer drinking and scrabble playing for cigarettes!!

What kind of ants? Where are they nesting? What are their food sources, inside or outside?

Answer these questions and I will tell you the best methods of killing them, except for the Pharoah Ant which is highly resistant to any chemical or treatment.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.
I found the information at http://www.pests.in useful.

I use dish detergent (just a trickle) down the mound/nest, followed by a liberal pouring of boiling water from the kettle.

Boric acid will kill... or ceder (chips, bedding, spray) will chase away, I've also heard salt will keep them away but I'm not sure on that one!

Gasoline is the most fun. But seriously you can use grits, or boric acid. You can get boric acid from most drug stores.
