Maybe with RIT dye??

Sure you can! I wouldn't use Rit dye because it is concentrated to be added with water to dye garments. However, shoe repair shops carry a product that is specially made to dye shoes. It comes with an applicator that is easy to use, it comes in almost any color you desire and it is formulated to be permanent. You can get it for around $5-8 depending on your area.

Rit is OK, but I think you need to use heat with it. I'm a big fan of Procion MX dyes by Jaquard, available at art supply stores or on line from Jaquard. The Procion dyes are good for cellulose fibers like cotton and rayon.
My niece has a pair of Vans that were a black and white pattern and she used a bunch of different colors of sharpie markers to customize them, really cool looking! If you do this, practice first on something else to get into "the groove".
