I think the answers given thus far are somewhat true, but also are to some extent naive. College is really about two things: growing your mind and growing up. There's the aspect of studying and making something of your brain, which is ostensibly the point of going to college. But classes are different, professors are different from high school teachers, and the work is (if selected properly) much harder and more concentrated than was high school work.

On the other hand, when a typical student starts college, he or she is really quite young. A young student has to manage time, studies, perhaps a job. Additionally there are social pressures that a person probably never had to manage before, such as living with other people, tight cliques, mature romantic relationships, and so on.

In a word, it's tough--no question. How does a new student handle it? Slowly. Take on only what you can manage. Case in point: when I was a freshman, I had exactly ONE extracurricular activity that met twice a week for two hours. By the time I was a senior, I was a double major, worked on campus for pay 12 hours per week, and worked in the campus theatre not for pay 15 hours per week. And I consistently made dean's list. One semester I had all As. And this was at an elite private liberal arts college, so the workload was intense.

Hope this vignette helps. Good luck, don't sweat it, and recognize that EVERYONE else is going through this, too (took me a while to realize that myself!).

I didn't find college life difficult at all. Have you considered the possibility that you are making it difficult?

There are lots of reasons why it might be so -- but the main ones could be that there is something psychological going on or you are not paying enough attention to your studies.

The latter problem can be solved by changing your attitude and getting down to work. Your university probably has programs that will help you develop better study habits -- but it may be that you have to change your life around to avoid various temptations.

The former problem (psychological) is a bit trickier to handle -- but your university may have counseling programs available to help you.

I believe college seems so difficult because you are finally on your own, and all of the new changes can be overwhelming. I stopped going to college, and I still want to go back. Now that I am not in college, I realize what great opportunities it offers. I don't think you will ever regret going to college. It may seem difficult now, but try to enjoy all of the career and other choices it offers you. Try things that interest you, sometimes you will be suprised at what you enjoy. Follow your heart. Good luck and happy Thanksgiving!

College life is meant to make or break you in order to see if you are prepared for stresses of the real world and a real job. Sure everyones job is stressful whether you have gone to college or not but college students are more likely to get jobs that are more highly stressful like a doctor or a lawyer. It tests your commitment which is very important once you get out into the real world.

Because it isn't "party party party get laid party party get laid again party party get laid" like you probably thought it would be when you applied???

Yeah, you have to actually do work and stuff, and you have to actually study. Not like high school when you can just breeze right through. And some students have to support themselves while in school, by getting a job, etc. Others, who have mommy and daddy pay for everything, have it easier in most cases. It's a lot to take in and a lot to handle, especially if you have never been on your own before.
