Good idea to wash the engine. It is best to take it to a car wash for the High pressure and all.
Don't worry about the "cover the alternator" that is no longer necessary. leave the engine running and try to avoid direct contact with soaking the ignition, you can stall the engine. but the rest of it soak it then high pressure wash it....
The grease on the engine is actually bad for it as it traps in heat...Go take care of that car. I wish more people did.

I own a 1995 Grand Am with a V6. I bought it new.
I wash the engine almost every time I wash my car.
Wash the motor while it is cold. It is safer. Also, this way you won't risk cracking anything by applying cold water to hot components.
I just use a bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush. I rinse with a garden hose.
After rinsing, I start the engine and let it run a few minutes to dry it off.
The engine is sealed pretty well and I have never had any problems. The wiring harness has weather-pack connectors and have never had any problems with the wiring getting wet. This engine uses a crank fired ignition system so there is no distributor to worry about. I've never had any problems with the alternator getting wet.
Over the 12 years I owned this car, I would say I have washed the motor over 100 times.
The engine in my 95 looks almost as good as the day I bought it.

Use a degreaser that you can get from autozone or any other car parts place. Let it sit and use a high pressure hose (car wash) to rinse it off. Wear safety glass. You may have to do this more than a few times if it hasn't been done in a while. You may also have to rub with a cloth and even scrape some metal surfaces with a screwdriver. Try not to spray directly on electronic parts like ignition coils. While you are at the parts store you can buy a Haynes manual to learn how to do some maintenance and repairs.

don't get the fuse panel or the alternator moist. A stress washer could push water into the place you do no longer desire it. what's the difficulty with a backyard hose? Why "on suitable"? placed the degreaser on the grease, and on the paint all over the engine compartment. I used to have my engine steam wiped clean interior the 70's. i do no longer think of water is so large for engines now that there is a lot electronics in touch. might as nicely do your pc pc tower with then stress washer in case you're at it. I clean the paint around the engine with detergent, and placed armor all on the black plastic factors. Cleanliness is next to godliness different than below the hood.

Generally speaking, you don't. If you get water into your distributor or alternator, that is bad. If your spark plugs wires are not at 100% they can short out with water applied. Once you do this, your car may not start until it has dried out completely. I'd advise against it.

Why would you need to wash your car's engine? The grease that's there is suppose to be there.
