swimming is undoubtedly the most worthwhile excercise as no other sport or activity allows you to utilise as many muscles as you do in swimming. It is extremely good for your lungs and it wont be long before you notice an improvement in your stamina and overall phsique, however in saying this it takes dedication just like any other endeavour.

I have been a swimmer for 8 years now. It depends what you want to do. To lose weight, its not the stroke but the frequency. I am a butterfly swimmer, butterfly tones your core if you do it right. Backstroke helps your love handles, and shoulbers. Breastroke is good for your legs and shoulders, and free is for all over health. The benefits of swimming is it is a lifelong sport, meaning unlike backetball, soccer football ect. you can do it when your 50, 60, 70, forever, so if thats what your looking for great. Swimming is amaizin because it is more indivvidule, and you dont have to worry about anyone but your self. Hopefully i helped.

Swimming is like all cardiovascular activity/exercise, it works the heart & it has ZERO impact which is very good for people who are on recovery/rehabilitation. Since water react in direct resistance manner, strength is gain (via anabolic actitivities) due to individuals ability, hence back to ZERO impact.
Most of the time all body major muscles are being use. Front Crawl (Freestyle) uses more on the upper body which means limited muscles group are use and thus contribute to less energy consumption. most folks are wore out by their poor breathing technique than the stroke. Breast Stroke (Frog style) uses all the major muscle group, chest, back, thigh, butt, this given a more overall work out & thurs contribute to more energy consumption. also most folks are able to follow the breathing rythematicly.
conventional/classical stroke (eg. breast stroke & front crawl) is less harmful to the back comparing with hybrid/modified stroke (eg.butterfly).
and to see progress, i will recommend 3 times per week and duration of 30-60mins.

One of the best advantages of swimming is that it teaches you to relax while being strong. Upon learning to love the water and just enjoy either the challenge or relaxation aspect, you allow yourself to be stress-free. I am a firm believer in learning every stroke as there are benefits of each that are all their own. Butterfly - strength; breast - grace; front crawl - speed; back crawl - balance; side - lifesaving; elementary back - freedom. Technique before speed is always the best.

Straight stroke is good. You see progress by how much faster you get and if you don't get tired as easy. It cleares your sinus's and it targets the arms and legs.

also it's low impact- easy on the joints etc.
I run too but many people will develop knee or other problems over time if that's all you did.
A variety of exercises beats the hell out of just doing one type.
