The spores of fungi are present almost everywhere, awaiting the right conditions for development. Most spores will never develop, but every so often one will develop into a new mature fungal organism. Fungi are a distinct kingdom of life, neither animal nor plant. Like animals, they derive the materials they need for their development from other existing organic matter. Like plants, they are rooted in one place, and spread by distributing their seed (the spores). For the most part fungi grow on material that is no longer living, and assist the process of decay and recycling, for example they are often associated with tree stumps and fallen trees. Some fungi can invade living organisms and evade immune responses, they range from the relatively innocuous, such as athlete's foot, to fatal infections, such as honey fungus. Hope that helps!
