Medical transcription is the typing of dictation into a word processing program. Dictation is usually on a tape or electronic device.

To do this, one must know how to use the equipment. A transcription machine plays tapes and normally has a foot pedal so you can stop/start/move forward/move backward on the tape while you type. That way, you do not have to take your hands off the keyboard.

It's not as easy as it sounds. The person has to learn the format for different types of medical reports, know medical terminology and anatomy and physiology, grammar, and spelling of medical terms and abbreviations.

It will likely be phased out in the not so distant future as more doctors are going to computer voice recognition programs that do the typing as the doctor speaks. Many use it now.

Best Wishes,

Sue
