Hi, I have two really close friends who are waiters at a nice restaurant downtown. Anyway, they are two of the nicest guys around, but after having waited tables over the past year, they have grown to hate serving Black people. Why? Because they say that Black people, without fail, come in, demand everything and then NEVER tip (or if they do tip, it's at most one dollar). Now, a lot of people would call my pals racist...but is it racist to not want to serve a group of people who, in general, are very rude and cheap? They say even their Black co-workers hate serving Black people...is that sad? I know not ALL Black people are cheap and rude at restaurants, but if the majority are, isn't it understandable that some waiters/waitresses would not want to serve them? And don't go crying that just bc they're Black, they get bad service...not true. I feel like a lot of Black patrons have a "you owe me" mentality..like they were the victims of awful crap and now they're getting back.

I used to wait tables at a casual dining restaurant, I'll call it Uby Uesday's, and the patrons were as diverse as the staff. And if you are a racist before you step into an Uby Uesday's, you will be a racist when you are inside an Uby Useday's.
The white people said blacks don't tip and the black people said whites don't tip. Young people said older people don't tip, and older people said young people don't tip.
What I noticed is that sucky servers don't get tipped well, and obnoxious guests may not receive stellar service.
Otherwise, people should just cook for themselves and / or not wait tables.

It's not wrong to not want to serve blacks. You're right, even black waiters hate serving black people. I know this becaus I am black, but I strive everyday to break the stereotypes that my "people" have established in America. I usually don't carry cash, but when I go into a restaurant I make sure I have something to give a tip with. I even left the restaurant to go to the atm once, because I do demand alot when I go out, "extra this, no that" but I pay for what I request, food and service, EVERYTIME.
I'm pretty sure this wont make you feel any better but I've learned that the reason the blacks who don't tip, do it because they are cheap and ignorant. It's dumb to spend money on food when you cant afford to tip, you could just buy groceries and cook. AND to expect service from a person and not pay them is cruel. It's sad but that's just how SOME (not all, and definately not me) think and live their lives. That's why we have the stereotypes. Some people do have the "you owe me" mentality. I admit I did for a while to. But honestly it was because of the way I was raised. It wasnt until I grew up that I realized the only way to stop racisim is to just stop it. So, the next time you get black customers try serving them so well, that they'll see you as a person, not someone who owes them. Make them feel guilty if they dont tip you.

Think of this possibility - maybe your pals are less than warm and cordial to all Black patrons now since they've had a few bad experiences? People can tell when servers have an attitude and they generally will get an attitude right back - or at least it will show in the tips.
People are people and rudeness knows no color ya know? If this gets to your friends so badly, perhaps they shouldn't be working in a position where they have to serve the public and should find office jobs instead.

Waiting On Black People

It's so sad to see that after all these years there are people living among us (and I'm talking about the person who asked the question, and the racists ones who answered). Why do you have to make this into a race issue? Do you think maybe there is a chance you're not getting tips from people because you're ignorant? Using the word "they're" and "them" to describe a race a people it the stupidest thing I've ever seen. All I can suggest is, change your attitude and presumption toward ALL people and you might make more money. Better yet, go to school and get educated (which you OBVIOUSLY aren't) and you won't have to make a living serving food in the FIRST PLACE!!

let's face it, people on a tight budget who want to get a meal once in a while don't tip big...those waiters were darned lucky that they received a tip from anyone at all. It's understood that waiters are paid on commission and their income is part from the tips, but there are also restaurants out there that include the tip in the tab. Those waiters can go work for them.
This is not a Black problem at all, it's a people problem. They probably use the word color just to differentiate between the heavy tippers and the not so heavy tippers. That could go for any color. Maybe you got the wrong impression.

Yes of course it's wrong! Lol it may feel like it's always true and you may feel like you have a perfect reason to not like serving them it's still wrong. You should never expect something terrible out of people because of their skin. I'm a server and I am black and I do find this trend very true but you still have to fight that thought because it is wrong. A lot of servers are basically too lazy or want to feel like their natural feeling is justified because they don't want to change their obviously wrong feelings. I'm working on it and so should others

Maybe the black people notice the underlying hatred or unhappiness with them and that is why they undertip. White people undertip all the time too. My boyfriend never tips, he says it's his money (even when I tell them they get lower wages because of the expected gratuities)
If they really have a problem turn it into a ratio. How many whites vs. blacks undertip? Take it down on a notepad and at the end of the days work, tally it up 45 black to 30 white, no big deal.
10 black to 3 white, maybe.

I worked In the restraunt field for many years and I look more at my averages than what and who tips best, however If someone Is a regular and Is disrespectfull,he may have to wait for things while I serve others and I didnt have trouble with Black people but mostly with people from other countrys.

I pay attention this, too. Black waiters/waitresses do no longer even prefer to serve BLACK purchasers, and that they call us racist. Waiters/waitresses gets a commission under minimum salary, so which you will possibly desire to the two be predicted to tip or consume at living house.
