There are some cults that worship reptiles and alter their bodies to match it. This can include tattoos, slicing their tongues to create a forked appearance, and placing items under the skin to create ridges under the skin.

These cults are normally Western. The sects (not quite a cult because its not as a defined group) that worship reptiles in India are usually considered Hindus. Yes, their culture is very old, but it normally doesn't involve the body mutilation that the Western cults enact.

I haven't seen "the reptile," but on the whole, horror films don't spend their budgets on research to ensure the references to real religions are accurate.

I've heard that comic book writer Alan Moore believes in this stuff (or maybe the article was half-serious? I'm not sure.) I think Wikipedia mentioned this.
