I think i know the game. We call it "blackjack" and its addictive little fun game - but its not the blackjack as some other people call pontoon or 21.

2 is pick up 2.. unless you have a 2... ect. 8 miss a go, blackjack pick up 5 unless you have a blackjack to counter, or a red jack to neutralise.. queen reverses play... and you have to play a card of the same suit on a King.

I've heard it called a few things.
My Grandmother first taught me this game and called it Tony's game after the man who taught it to her.

Other people called it Sh*thead as already mentioned.
And I have also heard it called "Pick-Up", "Crazy 8" "Threes" depending on the slight variety of game being played.

It very similar to the game Uno - which is a branded game played with specific cards that have the same function as 2 = pick up two cards, Jack = change suit, 8 = change direction etc

Thank you so much for taking me back to a part of my forgotten youth! Crazy Eights in my house - my mother would have died if we'd used the s*** word.
I'll certainly be bringing out the cards this Christmas and reminding the family of the fun that we had.
Cheers!

S**thead is what we called it - but we used it as a drinking game during my party years, so I don't know if that's an accurate name...

It sounds like a variety of Uno which is a marketed game. We used to call it "Oh Sh*t"
