She's a exchange student from South Korea and her host mom basically treats her like a maid. Also she got grounded because she didn't want to buy herself a pair of snowpants. She just feels miserable, is their anything I could actually try to do? I'm one of her friends and I'd like to try and help her.

First of all, she needs to report the host family to the university/agency who placed her with that family. They were supposed to "vet" the family before placing anyone there. Secondly, she should ask to be removed and placed elsewhere since her civil rights are being violated and she is being treated as an unpaid servant. She might also want to contact a counselor or other official at the school she is attending here and file a complaint. Good Luck!

I've seen this happen once before. My wife and I stepped in and we reported it to the local welfare office. They sent out a representative right away and took the two boys out. They were using them as slaves.

I would certainly do something, Tell her to go to her student consular first. If that doesn't work, I'm sure she must have some kind of agent that represents her or, go to the welfare office and report it, with her would be best.

This gives the entire program a bad name and the United States as a whole. What do they think of us I wonder?

She has the number to the coordinator in the region and the 1-800# for the organization, if she doesn't then I'm sure her parents "real" do and she or you should call and report the abuse right away.
Good luck!
Also she should know the name of the organization who sent her here you could look up there number on the internet and report it.

Guide her how she can earn during her free time. No one likes to take financial help from friends.
