i drive a 92 cavalier and my car shakes when i start it up sometime.. its a hit or miss ,i like to say it has a mind of its own, but it shakes in park, neutral, drive and even reverse. It shakes worse when i stop and once i floor it to maybe 40 mph, if im lucky, it wont shake as bad. It also has an odor, that i cant really descibe, once i drive it around.(this is only when my car shakes) My dad recently got new tires for my car and admission coil also he fixed something about my spark plugs). He also added antifreeze to my car.. if that even matters. Ive put fuel injector in my baby, and also a thing called "Heet" if anyone knows anything that can help me out, please post!

Sounds like a misfire.

Could be a bad coil
Fouled spark plug
Bad Spark Plug wire.
Plugged Fuel Injectors
Camshaft may have jumped time

Rather than just randomly throwing parts into it, you need to bring it to a reputable mechanic.

The best way to quickly diagnose a modern fuel injected vehicle is to connect a scan tool into the computer diagnostic port. These scan tools are normally too expensive for a shade-tree mechanic, starting from $200 - $400.

As bad as this engine is running, I'm reasonably sure the computer has stored some diagnostic codes that can be extracted with this tool. This information can help a mechanic quickly and accurately find the problem.

Just be sure to check around to find a good mechanic. There are many good and bad mechanics out there.

Well the first thing that came to my mind, because I have a KIA Rio and it was doing the same thing.. I would check the motor mounts and also the "dogbone", if you ask a mechanic they will know what I am talking about, if you also want another way to check and see start the veh, leave it in park with the parking brake on and rev the engine. if the motor jumps up a good amount that's probably what your problem is.. The smell you would have to be a little more specific.. If it smells like rotten eggs.. you have a Catalytic converter problem... Hope I could help

I was going to suggest full tune up with plug wires and all the parts but the engine usually smooths out at higher speeds 10mph or higher. It sounds like you may have motor/Transmission mount failure or a torque converter failure. The next step would be replace the injectors. Hey it's a 92. they are not too expensive, and they do wear out.

The odor you are smellins is either AntiFreeze being tossed around or oil being tossed out of the ssshhhaaakkkiinnngg motor. it will probably go away.

It could be one of several things. Ignition/timing is off, vacuum leak somewhere in the car, or compression loss on one or more cylinders. From your description of the symptoms I would say that the compression problem is the least likely. Have your dad or mechanic put a timing light on it and check that the timing is correct. Also check for any loose wires on or connected to the ignition system.

The obvious thing to check with the history you give is, are the spark plug wires in correct order and on tight? The correct thing to do is to take it to a mechanic and have it diagnosed correctly. Not over the internet. Hope it is just a plug wire. Good luck!
