Sorry but you will need a gas fitter, the thermocouple has gone on the fire.

Two question here. 1. Is the pilot light going out before the fire is lit, or do you have a problem lighting the pilot light.
Try this anyhow, once the pilot light is lit, keep the knob turned, and slowly release it, if that don't work, call out an engineer.

The button just creates a spark to ignite the gas. You can always use a match to light the fire instead. It's the same with a gas hob.

This might help. When it lights keep the knob turned for about 20 seconds. Not so it clicks but so it keeps lit. Then release it slowly.
Some types work like this.

You have to hold the button in long enough to heat up the thermocouple. Once it is hot enough the pilot light will stay on if it does not then the thermcouple is bad

You need to hold it in until the lighter glows really red and then release quickly to light fire.

Before spending any money; ie you have used matches etc to light it gently hoover around the area where the spark is, there`s a chance that the spark gap is clogged with ash.

Sounds like you would be best to contact a corgi registered gas fitter.
