9 - 3 * 3 + 4 = 22
should be placed in brackets as follows
(9-3)*3+4 = 22

the rule for deciding the order to work things out in is
b brackets
i indices
d division
m multiplication
a addition
s subtraction

what this means is that you work through your sum doing the maths in this order. So for your example above, if you had no brackets you would
1. Do the multiplication 3 * 3 = 9
2. Do the addition 9 + 4 = 13
3. Do the subtraction 9 - 13 = -4
Putting in the brackets "forces" you to do the subtraction first, as we do things inside brackets before doing anything outside the brackets.

{9-3}x3+4=22

that's one of the most important things
in maths-you've got to be able to deal
effectively with brackets-if you've got a
problem with it,get your teacher to help you
with it-don't be scared to ask-that's
what they are there for
you must be able to describe terms
accurately-including the use of
brackets

i hope that this helps
