Imagine a number line (or better yet, draw it). Anything to the left of the zero is a negative number. Usually, when you add, you continue to the right, right? Well when you add a NEGATIVE, you go left. Whenever you see a minus sign, think left. Now, if you see a negative of a negative, that means go the opposite way of the negative... which means go to the right. Just keep thinking -- positive and negative are opposite, so each time you see one, start in that direction, but reverse direction when the sign changes. That's how I think of it, anyway.

-9

For this problem, since both numbers are negative, you can look at it as if you were adding positive numbers. 6 + 3 = 9. Since the the original numbers are negative here, you know that the answer is negative.

When the signs of the two numbers are different, you have to see which one is bigger. Look at the absolute values of both numbers and determin if the positive or the negative number is larger. Then subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value and you'll get the numerical portion. The sign is the sign of the number that had the larger absolute value.

The answer is negative nine. Whenever you have a problem like that, if the second number is negative, make it positive and reverse the operation sign in front of it. This only works for addition and subtraction, though.
