This has been happening for months. Upon boot of Windows, or just any other time it feels like it- even if I don't have an Internet Explorer window open, I get a message pop up that says: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost." There is only a CLOSE button at the bottom right. No "X" at the top right. When I click CLOSE, nothing happens- explorer does not shut down. Anybody know what is causing that?! Thank you!

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Norton, ran update and ran virus scan. I downloaded CounterSpy, Spywareblaster, and Ad-Aware, and ran all those. I keep my system constantly updated from the Windows site too. Still have problem.

If your keen on looking at dump files that windows creates when a program crashes you might be able to pin down the problem there, you may also wish to try scanning the hard drive for errors you may actually have to let windows scan for errors on the next reboot to get full features of its scanning.
You can find this by going to my computer right clicking on the drive you want to scan for errors and then clicking properties then going to the tools tab and hitting the check now button. If that doesn't help and I hate to say it but clean reinstalling windows always fixes even the most stubborn of errors.
Another thing you might try is checking the registry for errors, I find that Registry First Aid is a fairly good program for that.

When you click on "close" and IE doesn't close, it means one or two operations or processes in your computer's microprocessor may have jammed. Since your OS uses time sharing, these problems happen quite rarely.
Try to boot you OS in "safe mode networking" and try to browse. You will not have this problem

The causes for this problem are may be a zonealarm is installed or you might have had quaterdeck clean sweep before you either upgraded or installed windows. it could also be your computer is configured to automatically run a type of program that is damaged or is incompatible with Windows 2000 or your version of Internet Explorer
To solve this problem:
In safe mode if you don't have problems, then you will have to uninstall all the damaged programs from the start up mode.
There are also various softwares available to uninstall the incompatible program and the damaged ones. These are available with different vendors.

You may want to try a "clean install".Go to "Add and Remove Programs" in the control panel and remove IE 6 or 7, AFTER you download IE 6 or 7 from Microsoft.com to a USB flash drive or a second hard drive. Then reinstall IE 6 or 7 from the flash drive or second hard drive to your computer.

i have seen this happen on windows server 2003. it occurred after Internet Explorer beta 7 was installed. Try reinstalling internet explorer if you haven't done already. I still think IE6 is best, it causes me the least problems.
