Because they enjoy a good plot and want to find out who did it before they are told. A good mental chew-over without the nagginess of puzzle solving crosswords or sudoku etc. I like all, but reading who-dunnits is more fun, long-distance wise.

It gives readers the opportunity to play at being a detective; the actual crime is rarely their focus. Most crime fiction falls under the "whodunit" genre. Whodunits are basically a mentally stimulating puzzle where the reader must find the correct clues and discard the red herrings to arrive at a perfect solution.

In addition to enjoying trying to figure out the solution to the crime.... No one is trying to kill me and I am not suspected of a crime, so it just shows me how much worse things could be....

Also, it's comforting to be safe in my own house reading about dangerous things elsewhere.

Unlike life they are neat, self contained, have an understandable plot, solvable puzzles, and most important of all for our psyches, the bad guy gets caught and punished.

Our lives aren't like this, so the escape into an idealised fanatasy is very compelling.
