Can they legally find out what your last employers paid you? Do they ask when they call for a reference?

Actually they really can not do much of anything. A Personnel Manager told me once, that really all he can do is verify a person worked for the company. If, they were to say anything bad, the Dictatorship allows the person to sue the company. Now, with that said, we can assume there a Company Code/Understanding in the business world, that what said behind closed doors stays there. IF, you see what I say.

Some rules vary by state, but if you tell them you made $20 an hour, they can call your former employer and verify dates of employment and salary. Many employers however will not disclose salary info these days, but they can if asked. So if you only made $15 not $20, and they verify it, you will get caught in a lie, do you want that to happen?

They can ask anything they want of your former employer. Keep in mind the former employer may or may not have a company policy on the information they give out but there is no law against them disclosing whatever they want as long as it is TRUE. I work in HR and I don't release information about current or former employees without recieving written consent from them and THEN I only give out date of hire, date of termination, title and rate of pay. I do this to keep my company from getting sued for slander, libel and other such nonsense.

They can ask, but usually a previous employer will only verify the dates of employment.

They can ask the previous employer any question that they want but the previous employer can only state the he/she was employed from to.
