I'm thinking about getting a tattoo of a heart to symbolize love, but I also want something to balance it as a symbol for hate, but I don't know what to use.

If you are asking this question on the philosophical level, then there is no symbol for hate. This is only an emotion created by anger that is momentary and guided by selfishness for the most part. Love is an emotion that is ongoing and hate is one that will slowly diminish. Therefore, picking a symbol for hate would not be logical since a symbol is forever and hate is temporary. This is why, I believe, a symbol has not yet been established for hate.

Because you really want the antithesis of the heart of love, and yet since it's not a good idea to use something like the Nazi swastika (a terrific symbol of hate if there ever was one), how about a darkened heart with the red symbol for "NO" over it? That is, a red circle with a diagonal? I think people would get the idea.

There really isn't a sybol for hate. Only bastardized symbols that are associated with it.

Anyway, I have a suggestion, How 'bout one heart kinda on fire and the other to look like crumbling stone? Love is hot and full of fire and hate is usually like revenge and is served cold.

You still have two ranges of emotion but still have the whole balance thing as well.

It's a thought!

There really isn't a symbol that depicts hate, as hate isn't seen as a desirable emotion. Perhaps a circle with a line through it over a heart or a heart that is peirced or broken could be used for balance.

How about a black Spade (as in the suit in a deck of cards)? It's the same base shape, with the little stem-thing. I've always used that as my personal symbol of 'hate' in my sketches n stuff.

Since hate is the opposite of love, I suggest an inverted black heart contrasted with an upright red heart.

The symbol would be a human being devoured by something evil looking.
Some type of monster, with the teeth prominent and the human crying out in pain.

fire? thats the first thing i thought of, have a heart symbolizeing love and the other side, have fire in the same heart shape, almost like a heart made of fire, but more hateful looking, shadeing and stylization of it can depict hate if its done right, make sure the artist shows you his drawing of it an see if you like it
