I am actually a Red Sox fan, and I must say that Jeter should have won the award. With all the injuries that the Yankees had and the poor (for $25 million) performance by A-Rod, I thought that Jeter was the most valuable player in the American League.
It is hard to believe that a guy that hit under .240 through the first 2 months could beat out a guy that consistantly hit over .300 for the entire season. I am not even convinced that Mourneau was the MVP of the Twins. Didn't they have a catcher that competed for the batting title and was able to handle one of the best pitching staffs in the league?
If it means anything coming from a Red Sox fan....Jeter got screwed.

As a life long Yankee fan I must say I was a bit bummed that Jeter didn't win. I think Mourneau put up big numbers but is that the sole criteria for MVP. It's not the Most producing player award it's the Most VALUABLE Player award. Mourneau had a break out, spectacular year. My question is, was he even the MVP of his own team. Santana won the CY young so they would never give him the MVP. But what about Hunter, Nathan and Mauer. Is he better than them. I would probably put Mauer ahead of him. I think that Jeter didn't win because he never really gets the respect he deserves. His whole career all he has ever done is win. He doesn't have the greatest range, but then he always makes the most ridiculous catches. He's not a big rbi guy, but remeber that's not his job. (even though he still drove in 97 from the number 2 spot). The guy is always on base and always hits when they need it. I think the other thing that really hurt him was he didn't step up and defend ARod. As the leader and captain of the team that is his job and he definitely failed at that this year. I'm just glad that Ortiz didn't win because he is just a DH. Remember, the reward isn't the greatest/most feared hitter award.

I'm not a yankees fan. But I'm not a yankees hater.
It seems to me that Jeter was finally going to be rewarded for the intangibles he brings to the team. Primarily his leadership. But, I'm not sure this is the year to reward him for his leadership. He didn't seem to handle the A-Rod situation very well, and that was the team's primary distraction.
He had good numbers, not incredible production numbers. I think from a Yankees fan perspective, they figure he won't ever put up a year like he did this year (and perhaps that is true) and he should get the award due to the body of work over his career.
Personally, I don't like Morneau getting it. He's not a good defensive first baseman, while Jeter and others in the race are better defensively at their respective positions, and his numbers don't blow you away.
I guess I couldn't really argue either way. You can't give it to Ortiz. They were on a team with a lot of stars and still didn't make the playoffs.
I actually love Jeter (one of only a couple Yankees I can say that about). But, I tend to think the leadership on that team comes from a variety of players in the past, not all Jeter. That's the same reason that the Yankees aren't putting it together now in the post season. They don't have enough winners (like Jeter, but it takes more than one) on their team. Great lineup, sure. High profiles, sure.
Anyway, that's my rambling 2 cents.

I'm a Yankees fan and here is my breakdown
I think Yankee fans are pissed off more-so because he lost it to Morneau. I think if he lost to anyone else there wouldnt be as much of an outcry. When I first saw Morneau play I knew he was going to be good so I'm not going to completely bash the guy, but he didnt deserve the MVP over Jeter.
Jeter is a better defensive player at a much more difficult position. Morneau is a decent 1Bman, while Jeter is a very good SS. Jeter also had the second highest batting average in baseball. Lets also keep in mind Jeter is one of the most clutch performers in the game today. Derek also out-homered Morneau down the stretch (thats July till October, where Jeter out homered him 7-6). Morneau also has a better opportunity for RBIs. Jeter bats in the 2 spot, giving him less chances to knock runners in. Morneau bats in the heart of the order giving him men on base almost every time he is up at bat.
Dont get me wrong I love Justin Morneau and I think he will be a star for years to come, but I just dont feel he deserved the award over the Captain.

I'm a Yankees fan and I do think Jeter should have won it...but I'm not crying about it. Mourneau wasn't even the best player on his team. So how can he be league MVP?

I love the Yankees. I thik Jeter deserve the award. But Morneau has great numbers, and his team went to the playoffs too. Jeter did not carry the team along, just like Morneau. And the 1B is a great player. He deserve the award. And i´m happy big Papi did not get it. that´s enough.

I'm a met fan but i see enough yankee games and hear enough sports radio to know how important he is to the team but Mourneu deserved to win just as much as anyone else. There was no clear cut winner in either league. To say Jeter got robbed is crazy!
