What equation can i use in order to back out sales tax (8.625%) from a total, in order to find the subtotal?

For example if i had a total bill of $2000 and knew that the sales tax involved was 8.625% of the subtotal (X). How can i solve for X?

First your going to have to know what the total order comes to. Second, you need to know the tax rate. Every state is different. I'm going to use 5% (becauses that what it is where I live and its an easy number). If your purchase comes to $150.00, multiply that by .05 (5% or 5 cents), and it will give you the total tax amount $7.50. Now, just add that to the total $157.50 - May be a bit long, but, thats how I do it.
