Divide the final total by 1 + the sales tax (in decimal form). In your case, 2000 / (1 + 0.08625) or 2000 / 1.08625. A calculator can do this quickly. Answer = $1841.20, when rounded to the nearest whole cent.

First your going to have to know what the total order comes to. Second, you need to know the tax rate. Every state is different. I'm going to use 5% (becauses that what it is where I live and its an easy number). If your purchase comes to $150.00, multiply that by .05 (5% or 5 cents), and it will give you the total tax amount $7.50. Now, just add that to the total $157.50 - May be a bit long, but, thats how I do it.

turn 8.625 into a decimal = 0.08625 then add to 1 = 1.08625
divide the original figure by 1.08625 and that is the cost before sales tax.

Expressing the percentage as a fraction, i.e. 8.625 = 0.08625:
Tax = price * pct
Total = price + tax = price + price * pct = price * (1 + pct)
Price = total / (1 + pct)
PS: Watch those significant digits, you guys.
