A group of friends; all have been to vegas before but stayed on the strip, want to know the best place to stay downtown. Main activity will be playing poker.

The Golden Nugget has been a AAA, 4 diamond property for 29 years it's far and away the nicest hotel downtown...The GN has not been owned by Steve Wynn for years, it's owned by some restaurant chain now(Landry's? maybe)...The rooms are nice the service is great the new pool is very nice...I just got an updated report on the place from a friend who stayed there last weekend...

The only thing I don't care for about the GN is the casino, it always seems very crowded/cramped.. I did not play there very much in the past and probably won't bother now, since they removed the video poker machines that I like to play...

My personal choice is Main Street Station, it's much more open...I prefer the atmosphere here to any of the other DT hotels including the GN...MSS is filled with antiques, including a section of the Berlin Wall in the mens room...

This is a great site for LV info

Yes, Binion's is the place to "play" poker or craps downtown..But, unlike the LV strip all of the hotels on Fremont are within a 5 minute(max) walk of each other, except the El Cortez...The hotels DT are much smaller than on the strip, MGM is probably larger than the entire Fremont Street hotel cluster...The Golden Nugget is directly across the street from Binion's...MSS isn't directly on Fremont, it is on Main Street...MSS and the California are connected casino to casino by an inside sky bridge, you can check out the "golden arm" club as you cross the bridge into Cal...>Through Vegas Club out the door turn left and you're at Binion's, a 5 min stroll if you're taking it easy...

If it were me, I would stay at the Golden Nugget or Main Street Station and do my poker playing at Binion's...

Downtown: Binions is the birthplace of the World Series of Poker, so there is a lot of history. Next would be the Golden Nugget, they were building a new poker room this spring so you will want to make sure it is done.

Both of these casinos are considered to be in the top 10 places to play poker in Las Vegas.

Note: I also live in Las Vegas and have no problem with the downtown area, especially if you stay on or near Freemont Street. If you wander off, sure, you'll find some seedy areas pretty quickly.

The Golden Nugget... period! It has some of the nicest rooms in all of Vegas including hotels on the strip.

The Golden Nugget is owned by Steve Wynn who also owns Wynn Las Vegas. He is also the man responsible for building the Mirage, Bellagio, & Treasure Island although those properties are now owned by MGM/Mirage. Steve Wynn has a knack for knowing how guests like to be treated. And by being one of the best employers in Vegas, his "happy" employees treat guests with more respect than other places. That makes for a very enjoyable stay at the Golden Nugget.

I've lived in Las Vegas for most of my life and I would recommend not staying in a hotel downtown. A lot of "shady" people hang out down there. I would suggest staying on the strip. Your hotel will be nicer (newer), there are more places to play poker (and eat, see shows, etc.), and if you feel like taking a walk outside, you won't need to worry about being robbed, picked up by a prostitute, etc.

The only place downtown for poker is where it all began.

My wife and I like to stay at Paris. Ask for a room on the strip side, higher floor. Paris is right in the center of the strip, directly across from Bellagio. You will have front row view of the fountains, the eiffel tower, and the big blue balloon at a less expensive rate than bellagio. We think it's the best view in Vegas. Also, just a walk across the strip to Bellagio and Caesars, and right in the middle of Ballys, Aladdin, Flamingo, etc.
