There's a difference between filling a need and creating a need. When cell phones were first invented, no one really knew what they had been missing without them so there was no need. Now they are everywhere, they are needed because we know what it's like not to have them. A good marketing agent capitalizes on the known market and also tries to make new ones that didn't exist. Neither aspect is lying, it's being proactive and inventive.

no customers are not that stupid
marketeers spend hours and hours researching to define customers' needs and wants, then try to stress on these findings to reach those customers.
However, sometimes the marketeers need to think deeply on behalf of the target customers, to magnify some hidden needs and wants that the customers didnt notice or concentrate on.
it depends on the product or service ur trying to market, whether its a low quality, high quality, has added values...etc
so i guess the right word is "exaggerating" not "liars".

I happen to be in marketing, and in my company we make it our number one priority to market our products and services truthfully. We believe they are excellent and work well, so why advertise otherwise? I think customers generally create wants and desires from advertising and marketing, yes. Otherwise, how else would you know about new products and their capabilities? However, our needs are not something marketing can create for us. Needs are shelter, water, food, medicine, etc...
