A ghastly relic of the Middle Ages who is a walking advertisement for republicanism. A man who has to have seven boiled eggs lined up for him to choose the perfect one for his breakfast, a man who has to have his cushions plumped up by someone before he can put his ar*e on them, a man who likes a servant to squeeze toothpaste on his toothbrush for him, and a man who had to have a servant hold a specimen bottle for him to pee into. This very man married a pretty young woman who he didn't love purely for his "breeding programme", while he was sleeping with a married woman, and when his ambition in life was to be reincarnated as one of her tampons. He is someone who likes to pretend that he is an expert on subjects such as architecture, and who actively supported the disgusting "sport" of foxhunting right up to its abolition. He has a fondness for Islam (even has an Islamic garden), has friends in the Bin Laden family and wants to defend all faith (in defiance of the 500 year requirements of his role as the future head of the C of E), even though many Muslims would have executed him for his adultery (the fate of a princess in Saudi Arabia). When he married his mistress he should have gone into exile, as Edward VIII did. I hope that answers your question!

A poor bloke serving the world's longest apprenticeship
All the foregoing answers have indicated who he is and how he fits into the scheme of things, but you have to feel sorry for the guy. He won't become King until Mummy (Queen Elizabeth) dies, and passes the throne on to him. She's just turned 80, and her mom lived to be over 100, so there's a good chance she'll still be going strong at 90, 95 or who knows how long, given that she gets the finest medical care in the world.
So, poor old Charlie sits, cooling his heels, with make-believe jobs and busy work to keep him occupied. Small wonder he talks to trees! He's now over 60, at an age when many men either have retired or are getting close to retirement, and he hasn't even begun working yet! It's quite likely that he won't get his foot anywhere near the throne until he's almost 80 himself.
It must be a very frustrating life.

The most important aspect of the life of Prince Charles was that he was the husband of Lady Diana Spencer. Other than that he is an insignificant man with big ears.
