I've gotten cleaning help through craigslist. Much cheaper than anything else. I usually ask for full name, address, phone number, and 1 reference prior to allowing them entry into my house. I advertise in the 'wanted' category and state that I won't pay more than $10/hr. I usually get at least 4-5 responses to an ad (but I'm in a crowded metro area).

If you're talking about frequent household help (the person then becomes 'a household employee'), you need to read about that here - http://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040sh/ar01.html

Check the yellow pages or your local newspaper for a freelance service that provides maid service. You can usually find several people wanting to clean homes for extra cash. Do a little background check before hiring anyone. You don't want your home "really" cleaned out! Good Luck.

Put an ad in the newspaper. Ask for references. And check the references. You don't want a burglar working for you. YOu can alos do a people search and for less than $10.00 get a background check, which will show a criminal record if there is one.
