emotion in the song - if the song connects with something relevent to you or your mood and the artist manages to capture/portray this emotion successfully you have the making of a good song.
Great lyrics and melody/music are also a must - a kick @$$ bass line never hurt either!

good music and good vocal delivery - and they should compliment each other
(incidentally, you could take one of these away and still have a good instrumental or a capella song)
good lyrics to me are a bonus, although they should be highly valued. i've heard plenty of songs were the singer is singing about absolute crap but i doesn't mean i don't like the song

It depends what type of music. I prefer hip hop, rock, classical, broadway showtoons, and rap. My favorite artists are DC, Justin Timberlake, CHRIS BROWN, wicked the musical, Grease, and HINDER!!!

emotion. bottomline. when an artist can capture an emotion and put it into a song, whether it be love, sadness, joy, excitement....then you've got a good song.
