I have been sent a mail from North Carolina on Friday (11/16), to Chennai India, via US Mail, I need to track the current position of the mail. I also need to know how many days it will take to reach.

If the sender didn't get a tracking number, there is no one to get one assigned. The sender would have to have paid to get one and sent it to you.

You are going to have a problem for sure. First, you need to contact the sender and ask if it was sent with a tracking number and if they know the tracking number.
OR, you might get lucky and be able to contact the US post office and get someone who will go to the trouble to find it. You must be able to give him/her exact date, maybe time, sender name and address and receiver name and address.
You can go to usps.com and track with a tracking number, but more often than not, I have found, you will only get the date picked up and delivered.
Best of luck. Next time use FedEx. The sender will always have a tracking number and you will always get someone to tell you where it is and when it will arrive.

find out if the sender used registered mail or express. mail/parcel gets a tracking # when sent via registered or express. otherwise, there is no way 2 track the item. it could take a cpl of weeks especially now, during the holidays. hope u get your mail soon.

The tracking number is same as the Bar code number on the address form that was given to you as a customer copy by the post office.

Unlike UPS and FedEx, tracking numbers are an extra option with the US Postal Service. Unless it is requested, one is not assigned.
